The Sunflower Community Fund provides financial assistance to the Sunflower Community, a group of organizations and individuals in Ukraine that assists children in orphanages, people who have lived in orphanages, people with disabilities, at-risk youth, social orphans and children in poverty, and that seeks to improve the quality of their education.
Two of the Ukraine organizations that provide direct services are Diia.My based in Lviv and the Kamyanets-Podilsky State Institute.
Wartime Humanitarian Efforts
When the war broke out in February 2022 the Sunflower Community Fund was in a position to provide humanitarian relief to refugees fleeing Eastern Ukraine in partnership with Diia.MY. Aid has been provided in and around Lviv, and volunteers have sent shipments to many cities including as far as Kherson. During the first six months of the war 600 deliveries were provided to 1000 families. In addition, the Sunflower Community Fund has facilitated two very large shipments of medical supplies from the US to Ukraine.
Pre-war Efforts
Mentoring – Diia.MY, with support from the Sunflower Community Fund, organized mentoring programs in various locations in Ukraine for orphans and at-risk youth. Volunteers ran these programs under the supervision of Diia.My staff and with the help of psychologists. These programs included life-skills training, visits to employers, psychological support, and socialization tutoring.
Kamyanets-Podilsky State Institute – In the summer of 2019, the Sunflower Community heard about a group of orphans who used wheelchairs and who were about to be sent to live the rest of their lives at nursing homes. Knowing of a college in Kamyanets-Podilsky which accommodated students with disabilities but which was not wheelchair accessible, the Sunflower Community assisted the college in installing wheelchair ramps, and remodeling doorways, bathrooms and other structures.
